Having beaten Sampdoria to win the Italian Super Cup, AC Milan would never have thought they’d have to face the Blucerchiati in the European Super Cup. However, thanks to Sampdoria’s European Cup Winners’ Cup triumph over Anderlecht in Gothenburg in the same season where they also harboured hopes of winning the Scudetto, this is what the Rossoneri were tasked with. Just as what had happened against Barcelona the previous year, the first leg, which took place in Genoa, ended in a 1-1 draw. It would all come down to the return fixture.
Bologna was the city where AC Milan continued their trophy collection. The San Siro turf was in poor condition, with clumps of grass presenting a real problem and hindering the Rossoneri’s manouvres. This is why AC Milan chose to play at the Dall’Ara stadium. Despite being without Marco van Basten, who had to sit the match out due to suspension, goals from Gullit and Rijkaard secured the Rossoneri’s first trophy of the new season, an important follow-up success to the final won against Benfica in Vienna.
